Champagne Alfred Gratien x Tonnellerie de Champagne
Since 1864, Maison Alfred Gratien has vinified and aged its wines exclusively in oak, without malolactic fermentation. The interaction between wine and wood encourages gentle micro-oxygenation, allowing the wine to evolve, develop character, and gain a certain roundness—this is the essence of our signature style.
In our barrel-cellar, home to nearly 1,000 barrels, discover the traditions of Champagne and meet Jérôme Viard, artisan cooper and founder of the Tonnellerie de Champagne.
Immerse yourself in the different stages of crafting an oak barrel and learn how Jérôme Viard and Nicolas Jaeger, our Cellar Master, collaborated to shape the barrels used by Maison Alfred Gratien, with the aim of revealing the full potential of our future great Champagne wines.
Jérôme Viard will share his passion and deep knowledge of wood and cooperage, passed down through ancestral techniques combining skilled gestures and traditional tools, used to handcraft these vessels that will cradle the first wines of Champagne—the still base wines. Through the transmission of his expertise, you will have the privilege of assisting him in assembling a “fût en robe” (barrel structure), discovering the artistry of both material and craftsmanship.
This experience includes a guided visit with the participation of our cooper Jérôme Viard, hands-on involvement in assembling a barrel, and a tasting of Alfred Gratien Brut, Alfred Gratien Vintage, and Alfred Gratien Paradis Brut Vintage champagnes.
